Winter Wonderland!

Right now, Albuquerque looks like this.

In a way, it’s cool. It’s only the third time in my ten years here that it’s snowed like this in the city. It can get plenty cold, due to the altitude, but precipitation is usually very low. It IS a desert, after all. The mesa to the west and the East Mountain area get hit every year, but the city rarely gets any buildup at all, much less several inches. I’d be looking forward to a snowball fight if I weren’t coming down with a cold.

On the other hand, it’s kind of scary. Because we rarely get snow like this, most people can’t drive in it. Snow tires and chains are unknown here. My main hope is that everyone else gets out of work early, so I can have the highway to myself at 5:00.

Sure is pretty, though. Too bad it will probably all be gone tomorrow.

  1. Snow must look quite out of place in a desert area! It would have been good to see a pic.

  2. Shit there is a pic sorry missed it first time cool

  3. Must be global warming Joe.

  4. It’s the same here kinda – the higher elevations will get a couple good snows a year, but accumulation in the low country is rare. More often than not a heinous nor’easter will turn out as an ice storm, which blows big time.

    gawd i miss snow

  5. Gorgeous! I was in Alburquerque in December once, but there was no snow and it looked pretty boring.

  6. I can’t beleive how bad the roads are this morning. It took me TWICE as long because I rarely got out of 2nd gear. They NEVER prepare. This has happened a dozen times since I moved here, yet the city is ALWAYS taken by surprise. Buy some fucking salt, morons!!!!! Guess what? WE AREN’T IN SOUTHERN ARIZONA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Wow, you’ve had more snow than we have in Mass. so far this year! Incredible!
